It’s at this time of the year, Time Management or Prioritisation Management (as some now call it) gets worse rather than better. Everyone is so busy with their workloads and their minds are also busy with the Festive Period….regardless of their religious beliefs December is a ‘chaotic month’. So what is Time Management…well there are only 24 hours in a day (although some believe they have less time in their days than others) so how can people manage their time? It sounds very old school, but sleep is essentially one of the main factors in effectively managing your time…why? Well because if you are able to sleep solidly for however many hours you need then the mornings begin with a positive rather than a ‘can’t wait for this day to end so I can go back to bed’ negative slant. I often get told that people are unable to sleep as they have too much on their minds….there is a simple solution to this…have a pad and pen by your bed…when you lie down and thoughts start flooding in your head of things you need to do tomorrow…write them down….that way you know that once its written down you will have it as soon as you wake up in the morning and you can clear your mind for a restful sleep and a positive start to the next day

Clients ask me what the difference between Supervisory Skills and Management Skills is, the simple answer would be…nothing…to supervise is to manage, and to manage is to supervise. One particular client called in as they were struggling with a particular manager, who by all accounts lacked People skills…or an easier way to put it would be, lacked the ability to communicate in an acceptable way with others. I asked the client how did this person become a manager? They said he had moved up through the business, he started as an apprentice on a building site, and now manages the team (badly).

This actually winds me up…..how can companies expect people to just move into a supervisory role without the tools to be able to be an effective manager….In this day and age Social Skills are not a given…some people need to be taught how best to communicate with others, how to nurture others, how to successfully criticise members of their team without it seeming they are just ‘having a go at them’. Having an open door policy without being ‘one of the guys’.Understanding the difference between ‘mate can you do me a favour?’ to ‘I need this report completed by next Monday at 3pm’.This poor employee is just expected to know all of the above and move seamlessly into a role whereby his ‘mates’ who may well still be workers on the site now become people he supervises.Whether attending a 1 day Supervisory Skills followed by a further day a month later to work through areas that might need tweaking. Or a 2 day Managerial Skills course, new Supervisors or Managers will gain so much knowledge that will help them be the best Supervisors/Managers they can be.

When someone asked me why they would need Speedwriting in their lives, I said ‘Don’t you wish you knew what your children were texting to their friends?’
That is what Speedwriting is… adult text speak…well I say adult but that is due to the kind of terminology our trainers would use to suit our clients organisation. I can’t imagine my son ever texting his friends about the importance of confidentiality when discussing patients records, or needing to know how to write about a disciplinary matter etc.
Speedwriting is such a useful tool to have and some people I know even use if for their shopping lists……Is it a type of shorthand? I guess that’s what the older generation may call it, but if my memory serves me that had symbols as well as text.I’m nt gng 2 lie I hv w8d tl my sn hs gn 2 bd & chkd hs phn & hv wrkd ot wht he ws trng 2 sy.
